failing Education system of Nepal

Education has always been a priority from the very beginning. We all know that knowledge leads one to light from the darkness. Education helps one to become truthful. We all are aware of the benefits of education to an individual. But today, I am not here to mention the benefits of getting an education.  I am here to mention why is Nepal’s education system is failing.

So, in Nepal, grades matter so much than a student’s ability. If a student is brilliant in sports and arts, that is not recognized. Re-exams matter so much in Nepal. I don’t find re-exams as an improvement. Schools and colleges take re-exams to take re-exam fees are what I think. Because you tell me how can re-exam benefit a student?

Another problem is teachers always are busy making better students the best and do not focus on weak student’s progress. Toppers are going to top anyway, what teachers need to do is make weak students understand subjects they are weak in.

I can’t even explain here the importance of grades in our education system. A student will a C+ who is the best cricket player of the school is gets dominated by the whole school when he/she gets the result. If the school won’t notice the talents in students, who will? His/her parents are already worried about their marks and the school dominates them too, will they ever be able to showcase their talent to the world?

Another problem here is our education focuses much on the theoretical sides and ignores the practical sides. I believe education should be more on the practical side; it will help to understand what a student is exactly missing out on. From books to notes, assignments to slides, Nepalese students are getting a very traditional education.

We are missing out on something. And you know what? Creativity; we are so into books only. When student’s try to become creative and write answers from their creativity, it is considered wrong. We are only within the textbooks. Our education system should focus more on students' creativity and should encourage it.

Passing the exam has always been a great deal in Nepal. As I said passing is important, weak students tend to cheat in exams and pass. Now, what is the benefit of cheating and passing the exam? I won’t say this is the student’s fault; it is completely the education system’s fault. We pass the exam and the schools hand us a certificate. I have never found certificates useful in these 19 years of my life. What a job seeks is ability and talent, not certificates.

We are given a deadline to submit the assignments and that’s when teachers feel their responsibility is over. The teacher gives certain marks to students and that’s it. Many of them have had taken the internet’s help, many of them may have cheated but no, submission is important, cheating is not a big deal in Nepal.

Now in some colleges, politics is so much important than studies. Government parties make student unions in college promote their party, sounds ridiculous right? But this is what happens in Nepalese education.

Why do you think Nepal has so few talented and qualified people in every sector? It is because education here is all about passing the exam, not about recognizing a student’s talents. Our education system is failing, we are failing. Because of this old education method, Nepal is lacking behind. If the same old trend is followed forever, I don’t know I can’t even imagine how worse Nepal’s condition would become.
